Simple past

The simple past, past simple or past indefinite, sometimes called the preterite, is the basic form of the past tense in Modern English. It is used principally to describe events in the past, although it also has some other uses. Regular English verbs form the simple past in -ed; however, there are a few hundred irregular verbs with different forms.

The term "simple" is used to distinguish the syntactical construction whose basic form uses the plain past tense alone, from other past tense constructions which use auxiliaries in combination with participles, such as the past perfect and past progressive.

Examples of use of race past
1. The culprits race past gullible people snatching their cell phones.
2. Cars are forced to halt as U.S. military convoys or Iraqi police vehicles race past, topped by menacing–looking gunners.
3. Rick Santorum (R–Pa.) to race past reporters was thwarted when a correspondent for the Pittsburgh Post–Gazette leaped into his path.
4. On the stump they tend to race past any mention of an accord and on to pledges that they will stem migration by improving the economy.
5. But it is hard not to feel that the Lib Dem motor is being revved well below its optimum speed, leaving the party puttering along in the centre lane while the Tories threaten to race past on the outside.
